Back from Hell-ay

Back from LA, good trip.

Beautiful weather (mid 80s, 60 at night). Stayed at the Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood, next to the Kodak Theater and Mann’s Chinese Theater. That was pretty cool being next to where the Oscars take place, and the famous movie theater. I remember the pictures of the Chinese Theater in ’77 when Star Wars opened.

Nice to be home, if still a little jet lagged.

More Video Games

Purchased ESPN NHL2k5 and Fable yesterday. Tried to buy Fable Thurs. night, but they were already sold out.

Fable is pretty cool. Some of the combat controls take some getting used to, especially spells, but the story is cool so far.

NHL2k5 is suprisingly good. NFL2k5’s Crib feature blows NHL2k5 away, NHL2k5s is a dumbed down version. You still have challenges and can buy stuff, but from a room and item perspective, it’s not even close.

I am enjoying it, though I need to tweak the settings. I beat Vancouver 2-1, and the Stars 3-1, but most of the games end up being about 5-2. My shots on goal are averaging almost twice the opponents. Presentation, Sound, Graphics are all 10/10. The reflection of the ice at the start of periods after the zamboni is there is amazing – you can see the reflection of the scoreboards, and it’s a beautiful thing.

Helping Kelly build shelves today. My version of helping is watching the kids.

Off to Lambeau tomorrow.

Sunday Sunday Sunday!

Ahh, NFL kickoff Sunday. Sitting here in the living room with the laptop wirelessly, flipping between games, currently on Bengals @ Jets.

Saw Resident Evil 2 last night. It was entertaining, closer to a rental than in the theater, but we had a good time.

White Chocolate Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are weird.

In general silwenae.net news, I have my old blog re-installed, but I cannot get it imported into this one for whatever reason. Both the RSS importer and the b2evo2wp importer crap out. I might look into doing it by hand, but blech.

Have some plans for the silwenae.net homepage, but all this CSS & PHP stuff needs to be learned.

I did get my GPG key uploaded so now you can email me securely!

Kids Pictures

I’ve added a ton of picture of the kids to the picture gallery.

And I even reordered them so they’re in chronological order by album (Kelly’s idea, not mine!).

And…. we're back

So for a week my server kept going up & down. And up & down. It would connect to the ‘net for 10 minuts, and then go down for 10 minutes trying to resolve domain names. I thought it was the server – having only been up for two weeks I was convinced my lack of knowledge around the firewall had to be the culprit. Plugged the Linkys router back in and still went up and down, but not nearly as often. (Linux servers must ping RR a bit more for current information than routers do).

So I broke down and called Roadrunner, and sure enough, they see power problems with the modem. Since I was the first person in Chaska to get Roadrunner service, I asked for a new modem (as Jason’s had been replaced a year or two ago, and the tech at the time claimed the new one was faster), but RR didn’t bite on the new modem.

So the cable tech shows up 2 days later (we’ll be there between 11 and 2, shows up at 2:45, but anyway) looks at the setup in the den and then in the basement, and does a double take. He’s shocked I even have service as my cable modem has a power rating of -10. Since I don’t have cable TV, he disconnects the coax from the house distribution and plugs the line straight into the cable modem. Then he’s pretty confident what the problem is and goes out to the gray box at the curb, and sure enough, the cable inside is completely corroded through. He tells my wife it looks like the box has been flooded, which she responds to “6 or 7 times” as the box sits between my neighbor and myself, right where the water flows down our property line when it rains.

Now my cable modem has a power rating of +4. Not that power ratings mean anything to me, but it’s working perfectly now. (Which is why you can even see this page!) But I still didn’t get a new cable modem. The cable tech claimed they used those during beta testing of RR service, but it was given to me when I got service. He asked my wife if we had gotten at Circuit City, and she laughed and said she was positive we hadn’t.

Fazin fixed the music server page not loading yesterday, so now I’m really happy.

More Gmail

A couple days ago I posted on how fast Gmail was re-stocking invites. I’ve sat on one last one for the past few days, got rid of it last night, and guess what? 6 more this morning.

What a weekend

The server’s back. And better than before. 340 gigs of loving, properly configured this time so if I have to replace the OS the data should stay (well, most of it).

Highlights of getting the server (silwenae.net) back online:

DHCP working

Firewall working

My blog up

Messed around for hours with my blog trying to import b2evo into WordPress. No go.
