Bloom County 2015

Since I was a kid, I’ve been a fan of Berke Breathed’s Bloom County. Over a dozen years ago while on vacation in San Francisco, I visited a number of used bookstores and completed my Bloom County book collection. I own every Bloom County book published, including the collections and the Library series. I even bought the Humble Bundle a year or two ago to re-purchase everything digitally so I can view it on my iPad.

So when Mr. Breathed brought Milo, Opus, Steve Dallas and the rest of the gang earlier this year as Bloom County 2015 I was through the moon. I took a picture of my stuffed Opus with a collection of my books and tweeted out my excitement.

I don't know who is happier today, Opus or me. #bloomcounty

A couple months after re-launching the comic strip, a store was launched to buy signed copies of the daily strips, merchandise and more. A daily strip costs $110 and a Sunday strip in color costs $150. It’s a steep price, but each strip is signed and Breathed also personally draws a pencil sketch of the character of your choice on the strip.

One of last week’s strips sealed the deal for me and I pulled the trigger and bought it today. Bloom County 2015 #76 features Cutter John trying to avoid the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer due to spoilers. Bloom County and a Star Wars reference together? These are two of my favorite things! Like Cutter John, I had successfully avoid Star Wars spoilers for the new movie… until the trailer came out and I read a scene by scene breakdown of the trailer with all the spoilers.

It will be a month before my personalized comic strip arrives. This will be a perfect addition to my new office in the new house.

Are you reading NextDraft?

If you’re not, you should be. Dave Pell curates the top 10 news items of the day, just for you, delivered straight to your inbox. Yup, it’s delivered via email, quite old school. Mr. Pell spends each morning for 3-4 hours browsing the web (no RSS reader for him!) and puts together the best stories to share and adds his own unique commentary to each of them. Some of the stories may have two or three different links each and give you a new perspective on what is going on in the world around you.

The MailChimp blog recently featured a story on NextDraft, discussing how Mr. Pell finds his sources links, reviews what he should include in each day’s edition, and shares that he hasn’t made a dollar from NextDraft.

That humanity comes through in the newsletter, in that the very same human who chooses and writes about that daily content also answers for it. “I do think one of the things about email that people respond to, and that makes it different from a blog, is that because it comes from my personal email address and lands in your inbox, there’s something a little more intimate about it,” he says. “If somebody wants to say something about my newsletter, they just hit ‘reply,’ it comes to me, and I’ll respond to them. It’s a little bit of a closer connection than just having a website.”

NextDraft features news from the serious, with stories shared about the recent election, coverage of the Newtown shootings, as well as pop culture, such as the video below, featuring a timeline of all the pop culture references in Quentin Tarantino’s films. The best part isn’t just getting the most interesting news from around the web, but also getting Dave Pell’s unique commentary on each story.

I highly recommend you subscribe to the email newsletter or download the new iOS app to get your daily dose of the best curated news on the web. And don’t forget to follow Dave Pell on Twitter, too.

Super Tecmo Brett

For those of us who grew up in the 80s, Super Tecmo Bowl was the best football game ever made. There was nothing like taking Herschel Walker 90 yards, turn around, run back to your own end zone, turn around again and run 100 yards for the score. All without being tackled.

Someone took the electrifying Packer win from last Monday night against Denver, and did a mashup with Super Tecmo Bowl.

Fantasy leagues for women

Bill Simmons at ESPN.com might be on to something: fantasy leagues for females.

Let’s be honest: most women don’t understand males’ fascination with all things fantasy, from baseball to football. But what if they had their own? Base it on Us Weekly, spend dollars against celebrities, and let the fantasy league be played!

Here’s the beauty of my new league. Let’s say you took a $5 flier on Denise Richards a while back, hoping she and Charlie Sheen would patch things up. But when, out of nowhere, she lands in a love triangle with Richie Sambora and Heather Locklear, she suddenly becomes Chris Shelton or Jonny Gomes, a bona fide sleeper! On the downside, I could easily see someone overpaying for Nicole Richie, thinking she might start to date Diddy or seek help for an eating disorder, and when she doesn’t, you’re playing catch-up for five months. See? The possibilities are endless.

Check out the article, Mr. Simmons is on to something.
