McKenzie's back!

ESPN’s Len Pasquarelli is reporting that Mike McKenzie will report to the Green Bay Packers Wed. morning, ending his holdout.

He is still seeking a trade, but is hoping a shift in strategy (by reporting to work) will help his case.

Even with a very good performance Monday night by the Pack, it will be nice to have him back.

Papers Please!

As some of my friends laugh at me for my, cough, somewhat, cough, liberal views, it’s good to see John Gilmore fight back and win a round.

As seen multiple times on Boing-Boing, John Gilmore’s personal fight against the government’s quest to require ID when flying and hide it in a secret law.

The 9th Court of Appeals has rejected (pdf link) the government’s motion to file a secret brief to keep a secret law a secret:

“In a one page order, the Court denied DOJ’s motion asking the Court’s permission to file their arguments in secret, allowing only the judges to read their full brief. A DOJ motion to suspend the briefing schedule was similarly denied.”

John Gilmore is the co-founder of Sun Microsystems, “alt” newsgroups on Usenet, and the EFF with such luminaries as Mitch Kapor (creator of Lotus 1-2-3) and Steve Wozniak (creator of the Apple PC). Still active in technology advocacy, Mr. Gilmore speaks against copy protection, internet encryption, and drug policy reform.

Linux Gaming

This article sums up most of my views of gaming on Linux.

I have 2 machines that still run XP – one for gaming, the other I used to 2box my other Everquest account back in the day. It still has a bunch of music I need to transfer to my server, but other than that, I keep telling myself it will be for video editing as that’s the only other thing Linux isn’t as good as Windows still.

But back to Linux gaming: As I game less and less now, I realize I have to get my basement done, as my using my high end computer for non-gaming tasks drives me nuts in Windows. For the last two weeks I’ve seriously considered wiping my XP partition, or at the least making it dual boot. But I’m lazy, though I’m getting closer every day. As I look at what games I play, only Doom 3 has the potential to be played on Linux. If I only ran Linux, I’d have UT2k4 there as well. I had great success with NeverWinter Nights on Linux, but other than that, there are no RPG choices. As I debate EQ2 and World of Warcraft, neither will play on Linux.

Is playing games on the X-box my only choice? (If I were to only run Linux).

I absolutely agree with the article regarding WINE. WINE is not an option for Linux gaming, and for developers it’s a cop-out. Yes, I understand DirectX has matured better and faster than OpenGL. But if major games can work natively on Mac OSX, is Linux that far out of reach?

Save Betamax – National Call-In Day September 14

I was the 1716th person to sign up for Save Betamax – National Call-In Day September 14.

If you haven’t heard, the new INDUCE Act will try to limit copyrights even more strictly than they already are.

After the recent verdict by the 9th Court of Appeals in the MGM vs. Grokster case, this law’s intent is specifically to limit the court’s rulings in these types of matters. Not only will it try to limit copyright, but technology as well.

It’s time to fight back. I’m calling Congress Tuesday. You should too.

Badger vs UNLV Review – 9/11/04

The Wisconsin Badgers hosted John Robinson’s UNLV football team at Camp Randall yesterday.

Looking at the history of these two teams, once again it was another strange game. Two years ago UNLV’s stadium suffered from power outages during the game, and last year UNLV stomped the Badgers 23-5 as the Badgers only scored on a field goal and a safety.

Bob Davie, former Notre Dame coach, and current color commentator for ESPN was eerily prophetic when in the first quarter he references last year’s safety by Wisconsin as UNLV is once again preparing ot punt from within their 5. Davie comments that UNLV won’t have forgotten tomorrow and may be nervous as the ball is hiked promptly sails over the punters head for a Badger safety.

Badger’s led for most of the first half 2-0, after missing 2 field goals early, including one from the 10, and a failed 4th and 1 from the Badgers 2. Badgers proceeded to score on a blocked UNLV field goal for a touchdown by Jim Leohnard and another safety. The only other scores were a field goal by UNLV and a later Badger touchdown.

All in all, it was kind of painful to watch, especially the first half. You would think a game featuring 2 safeties and a blocked FG for touchdown would be exciting, but the Badgers lack of offensive power was disturbing. True freshman running back Walker shows promise, but Booker Stanley is no Anthony Davis, and until Davis returns from an eye injury, the Badgers could have some trouble. QB John Stocco in his first year starting looks fairly good, with Owen Daniels and Brandon Williams being favortie targets.

Two games into the season, I’ve been pleasantly suprised with the UW defense. Led by a new defensive coordinator, they haven’t done anything flashy or given up really big plays, but solid and consistent play in and play out.

Next week: @ Arizona.

Help a Fat Guy Out!

So here I am watching NFL football.. watching the CBS feed on NFL Ticket and Kevin Smith pops in a commercial for Jersey Girl.

Holy crap was it funny – he holds up a picture of his wife, says how hot she was and a guy who looks like him needs the bling bling to keep her. So buy his movie. And help a fat guy out.

His self-deprecating humor cracks me up.

On a related note, I watched Jersey Girl this past Tuesday.

It was one of his better films, and very much unlike anything he has done before. While hints of his style and his older films were there (the jokes in the beginning, the 80s references, the obligatory Star Wars reference) the story was touching without being too sweet. And as much of a hard time as Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez got / get, I thought they had amazing chemistry on screen. (Don’t worry, she dies early in the flim). George Carlin has acting chops few know about, and the the girl who plays Gertie was a great actress for one so young. I highly recommend it.

Sunday Sunday Sunday!

Ahh, NFL kickoff Sunday. Sitting here in the living room with the laptop wirelessly, flipping between games, currently on Bengals @ Jets.

Saw Resident Evil 2 last night. It was entertaining, closer to a rental than in the theater, but we had a good time.

White Chocolate Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are weird.

In general silwenae.net news, I have my old blog re-installed, but I cannot get it imported into this one for whatever reason. Both the RSS importer and the b2evo2wp importer crap out. I might look into doing it by hand, but blech.

Have some plans for the silwenae.net homepage, but all this CSS & PHP stuff needs to be learned.

I did get my GPG key uploaded so now you can email me securely!

Kids Pictures

I’ve added a ton of picture of the kids to the picture gallery.

And I even reordered them so they’re in chronological order by album (Kelly’s idea, not mine!).
