Blog

Work in Progress

I’m updating silwenae.net, I’ve come to a compromise with myself.

I’m going to keep the blog software, but not as the homepage.

The homepage is in the process of getting updated with IcculusNews. Which has no documentation. It’s a series of PHP pages that calls a Perl daemon. It’s fun hacking at it even if I don’t know what I’m doing.

Thank god Kelly had Perl last semester. :D

I’m going to install IcculusFinger as well, and when I’ve got this all working, if anyone wants webspace / blog / finger ability, I’ll be more than happy to share.

Oops, I did it again

Did anyone besides me watch the NFL preseason show tonight on ABC?

Britney Spears had to do the worst lip-syncing I’ve ever seen. At one point, she is trying to put the mic on a mic stand while putting a glove on her hand. Her voice / inflection never changed as her head moved back and forth from the mic.

She really looked like she wasn’t even trying. And at the end when she thanked the crowd, there was an almost noticeable pop from turning the mic on.

Better

The new beta of the blog software works better as they’ve de-emphasized the multi-blog feature and made it easier to tweak.

Upgrade I did last night looks pretty good, I’ll keep it for now.

I did d/l IcculusNews and IcculusFinger. Icculus wasn’t kidding when he said it was lacking in documentation. :DIt’s all Perl, couple daemons that run. I’m going to look into it as I’m still intrigued by it, but we’ll see in the long run.

Grrr

I’m kind of frustrated with b2evolution (the software package running this blog).

In the .8 release, they added the functionality to do multiple blogs on one site. This broke my site fairly badly, and the documentation is lacking – but I don’t have a problem with that. This is beta software on top of a base package someone else created.

I did post a help post on their forums and got zero responses, even after searching before I posted.

.83 beta was just released, so I’ll try that. But if it doesn’t work, I’m seriously considering a very basic site running IcculusNews and IcculusFinger from Icculus.org.

Just don’t know if port 263 is open… otherwise I meet all the requirements, and having a web page that looks and feels like the old web appeals to me…

Bye Frankie

The Packers cut Frank Winters today. With the team since 1992, Frank was the starting center until 2 years ago when Mike Flanagan supplanted him.

Frank was also known as Brett’s best friend.

Ah well, the changing of the guard continues.

Phoenix

Just got back from a business trip in Phoenix.

Holy crap is it hot.

Hit the road at 6:30 a.m. and it’s already 90 degrees.

Heard on the news that the old record of 6 days in the year where it didn’t drop below 90 was shattered this year – 15 days total.

I need to go back in Dec / Jan when it’s cold here and warm there.

But the resort we stayed at was extremely nice – off-peak in season it was quite cheap.

Indy moved up

The Digital Bits is reporting that the Indiana Jones trilogy has been moved up from 11/4 to 10/21 to avoid competition with Finding Nemo.

Sounds good to me, early Christmas gift incoming!

Bummer the Packer game got called on rain Monday night in the 3rd quarter. But to be honest, we were playing Madden by halftime anyway.

They need their offensive tackles back. Having Favre get hurt in the preseason just isn’t worth it. Don’t start him if you don’t have to. And besides, don’t the Pack need to figure out who #2 and #3 QBs will be?

Go Pack!

It’s only the preseason, but the first game is tonight!

8pm, Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio vs. Kansas City Chiefs.

Boo for the cheap artificial turf.

Couldn’t find out if ABC is going to be using their HD truck from ESPN. ESPN has 3 of ’em, and has one out on permanent loan to ABC for MNF. But the listings don’t show tonight’s game in HD… even if it is the preseason, cameraman need practice too!

Go Pack!

EFF Interviews

Greplaw at Harvard has an interview up with Brad Templeton, Chairman of the EFF.

Good overview of what the EFF is, what they do, and what Brad personally believes in as well as where he came from.

Here’s a great quote:

# If you choose the three – and only three – most important issues for the EFF – what would they be?

Two of the EFF’s core issues — freedom of speech and surveillance — remain even more important today than they ever were. But the growing issue right now is certainly intellectual property and copyright — in particular when such areas of law start affecting freedom of speech, freedom to do research and to build software, freedom to publish and reverse engineer, all of which are happening under the DMCA.

Greplaw also has a rather tongue in cheek interview with Prof. Lawrence Lessig.

Apparently, Prof. Lessig’s personal blog was hosted by Gov. Howard Dean last week. What a great read! Dean mentions his thoughts on the DMCA, copyright and other issues. Dean’s campaign also has a blog up about the campaign.

Good stuff.
